History

Early Life & Rise in Intelligence

Clarissa Worthington was born into a well-educated British family and distinguished herself early through exceptional intellect, discipline, and composure under pressure. By her late twenties, she had entered British Intelligence and rapidly rose through the ranks, eventually earning a commissioned position within the British Armed Services as an Intelligence Officer.

At the outbreak of World War II, her analytical brilliance and strategic foresight led to her assignment to MI6, where she became one of the most promising young minds in British wartime intelligence.

Love, Loss, and Transformation

In 1940, Clarissa married her childhood sweetheart, LT Adam Baker, RAF, a Hawker Hurricane pilot, during the height of the Battle of Britain. Their time together was brief. He was killed in combat over the English Channel, a loss that profoundly altered the course of her life.

For two months, she withdrew in grief. When she returned, she did so with hardened resolve. She committed herself fully to the war effort—not as a passive analyst, but as an active participant in the fight against Nazi Germany.

The Failed Command

Recognizing her tactical brilliance, British command gave Clarissa field authority over a specialized unit operating against Nazi targets. It was an unprecedented move—and one her subordinates rejected outright.

The soldiers under her command refused to follow orders from a woman. They ignored her directives, challenged her authority, and ultimately made reckless decisions in the field. Clarissa’s strategy had been sound—but it was not followed.

The result was catastrophic.

Her unit was decimated.

Though she was not at fault, the British command quietly removed her from field leadership. Officially, it was a “transfer.” In truth, it was a political decision meant to bury a failure no one wanted to publicly examine.

Assignment to the Allied Fighters

Clarissa was reassigned to the Allied Fighters, a multinational specialized unit operating beyond conventional military structure. There, British Intelligence authorized her use of experimental “Advanced British Weapons”—in reality, ancient arcane relics repurposed for warfare.

Upon meeting Captain John Brown (Captain Invader), she was asked to select a codename. She chose “Vindication,” reflecting her need to redeem her past and honor both her fallen team and her deceased husband.

Captain Brown instead named her:

“Ms. Vindicator.”

The name remained.

War Partnership & Emotional Conflict

Over the next two years, Ms. Vindicator became one of the Allied Fighters’ most effective field commanders. Her strategic mind and battlefield composure complemented Captain Brown’s leadership perfectly.

Together, they:

  • planned complex operations

  • executed high-risk missions

  • developed mutual trust and reliance

Their connection was unmistakable to the team. Yet both maintained strict discipline, refusing to cross personal boundaries during most of the war.

That restraint did not last.

Following the death of John Brown’s brother in Italy, Clarissa saw the emotional burden he carried beneath his rigid command exterior. Their shared grief and pressure drew them together.

Near the end of the European war, they became lovers.

Pregnancy and Forced Removal

By February 1945, Clarissa was pregnant with John Brown’s child. She concealed it as long as possible, but her condition eventually became clear.

British command immediately removed her from active service—days before the final operations in Europe.

She was sent to the Azores, isolated and safe.

To her, it felt like exile.

War’s End & Proposal

Unable to remain idle, Clarissa later flew—using her arcane flight boots—to Hawaii, where she confronted John Brown.

There, he confessed what he had long suppressed:

  • that he loved her deeply

  • that he intended to build a safer world for her and their child

He proposed marriage on the spot, presenting a family heirloom ring.

She accepted.

Postwar Life and Fracture

After the war:

  • Clarissa initially declined leadership roles within MI6’s emerging “superhuman” divisions

  • She focused on raising their son, Adam Brown

Meanwhile:

  • John Brown became instrumental in forming what would become the CIA

  • His work kept him away for long periods

Clarissa was repeatedly drawn back into intelligence work. Over time, she returned to MI6 full-time.

Their marriage suffered.

Adam grew up:

  • intelligent

  • accomplished

  • emotionally neglected

  • increasingly resentful of both parents

The Fall of Adam Brown

In 1990, CIA operative John Brown infiltrated a superhuman-killing organization known as Baltic Force.

There, he discovered its leader:

Director 13 — his son, Adam Brown.

Adam had become a calculated, dangerous enemy.

When Adam attempted to execute captured heroes, John made the only decision he believed would save lives.

He killed his son.

Final Years and Death

The revelation shattered Clarissa.

She never forgave John.

Their marriage ended shortly after.

Clarissa continued briefly with MI6 but emotionally withdrew from life. Not long after, she died—officially of natural causes, though widely understood to be from emotional collapse.

Many would later say:

She died of a broken heart.

Powers
