Mary O’Casey was born and raised in Howth, Ireland, where she grew up in a hard-working fishing family that had deep roots in the town. From childhood, Mary stood apart from those around her. She was a dreamer, a romantic, and a young woman who found more comfort in beauty, folklore, and imagined worlds than in the often harsh realities of ordinary life. While others saw her as odd, Mary simply longed for something gentler, brighter, and more magical than the world she had inherited.

As she grew older, life dealt her a series of heavy blows. Her family life fractured, poverty deepened, and the economic decline of Howth crushed much of the local fishing community. Mary became increasingly isolated and socially ridiculed, gaining the cruel nickname “Mary o’ Jax” after an embarrassing plumbing disaster while working an odd job. Even so, she never fully let go of her love for Irish myth, fantasy, and the dream of living in a more enchanted world.

That dream changed forever on her sixteenth birthday at Howth Castle, when she met Aidan St. Lawrence. Their meeting was immediate and life-altering. Aidan gifted her an ornate silver headband set with a striking orange sapphire, only for the moment to erupt into scandal and violence when Aidan’s father, Cameron St. Lawrence, publicly accused Mary of theft. In the chaos that followed, Aidan exposed his father’s corruption before the people of Howth, and Mary came to see him not merely as a wealthy young noble, but as a brave and deeply wounded soul willing to stand for what was right.

Over time, Mary and Aidan grew close through a live-action role-playing group hosted at the castle. It was there that Mary embraced the role of Eriu, drawing inspiration from the mythic feminine spirit of Ireland, while Aidan became her loyal Elvenknight. What began as escapism gradually became the emotional language through which they expressed their deepest selves. Their shared fantasy life became both refuge and courtship.

When Aidan was cast out by his father and Mary herself was left homeless and abandoned by nearly everyone around her, the pair descended into poverty and instability. In their desperation, they joined a supposed druidic training school, hoping to find purpose and a path forward. The school proved fraudulent and exploitative, but Mary, yearning for something sacred and meaningful, threw herself into its teachings with wholehearted belief.

Their lives were shattered when Aidan was coerced into returning to Howth Castle to steal an artifact and was shot three times while escaping. Refused aid by the school and abandoned by those around her, Mary did the only thing she could do to survive the moment: she stepped fully into the persona of Lady Eriu. In that role, she found the strength, command, and presence she had never before been able to summon as Mary O’Casey. She dragged the dying Aidan to safety, forced strangers to help, and refused to yield to terror or despair.

This act led to their rescue by the mysterious Aria, a rogue druidic master who hid the couple away and trained them for four years in true druidic magic. Under Aria’s guidance, Mary matured from a fantasy-loving outcast into a genuinely formidable mystic. The enchanted headband she had first received from Aidan proved to be an artifact of great magical value, greatly amplifying her spellcasting and making her far more powerful than either she or Aidan first understood. During these years, Mary and Aidan married in secret and deepened both their love and their magical skill.

After Aria’s death, the couple traveled to Boston following the path she had foreseen for them: a future fighting beside Irish-descended heroes under the leadership of the Irish Fighter. Still hunted, falsely accused, and unable to safely reveal who they truly were, Mary and Aidan adopted magical disguises and re-entered the world in the identities they had once only played in fantasy. Thus Mary became, publicly and operationally, Lady Eriu.

Today, Lady Eriu serves with courage, poise, and remarkable magical ability. Though the persona began as playacting and evolved into concealment, it has also become something more complicated and more real. Mary is no goddess, yet she has grown into a figure of mythic presence and heroic conviction. Her greatest internal conflict remains the same: she is a good-hearted woman living a lie, hoping that the truth, when it finally comes, does not destroy everything she and Aidan have fought to build.

    • Lady Eriu carries three bags of seeds containing a broad variety of plant types, including vines, ivy, shrubs, trees, creepers, and even redwood seedlings. These support her plant-based spellcasting and allow her to create vegetation effects in otherwise barren environments.

    • She carries three powerful ward stones of unearthedly durable magical material. These stones can store warding spells and can also mystically record events occurring over a 20-hour period.
