Kim Ghim was born during the Soltan Invasion after his parents were exposed to an experimental South Korean thermoplasma weapons project. His father died from the accident, his mother died during childbirth, and Kim entered the world with the ability to alternate between extreme heat and extreme cold. Raised under the secretive Project Equinox near Gwangju, he spent most of his youth in containment while scientists studied his powers.

With the help of Min Kyung Kwon, the project manager who became his surrogate mother, Kim was eventually transferred to GUARD so he could become more than a weapon or research subject. Now known as Equinox, he serves the Terraguardians as a thermal balance and environmental containment specialist, using fire, ice, protective auras, thermal shields, and Thermal Equalization to protect civilians and stabilize dangerous conditions.

History
Kim Ghim was born from fear, science, war, and survival.
​
During the Soltan Invasion, Earth’s nations were forced into impossible decisions. Conventional armies were overwhelmed by alien technology, orbital strikes, power towers, occupation forces, and weapons no human defense system had been designed to face. Governments across the world began emergency research programs, some noble, some reckless, and many existing in the gray space between desperation and ethics.

South Korea was no exception.
​
Among its classified wartime defense projects was an experimental thermoplasma weapons program. The project’s purpose was to create battlefield systems capable of rapidly superheating or supercooling the environment around enemy forces. If successful, such technology could disrupt Soltan formations, disable equipment, create thermal shock zones, freeze advancing troops, or burn through hostile positions. The concept was dangerous, unstable, and ethically troubling, but the invasion made governments willing to attempt things they would never have approved in peacetime.

One of the lead scientists involved in the program was Hyun Jung Ghim. She was brilliant, dedicated, and pregnant.
​
Her husband, Hyun Ki Ghim, was also connected to the project. Both understood that the work was hazardous. They also understood the world outside the laboratory was collapsing under alien assault. To them, the research was not abstract. It was part of a national struggle to keep South Korea alive during one of the worst moments in modern history.

Then the experiment failed.
​
During a critical test, an unstable thermoplasma containment system detonated. The explosion was not a normal fire or cryogenic event. The released material produced a violent thermal inversion, exposing those nearby to extreme heat and extreme cold almost simultaneously. Hyun Ki and Hyun Jung were caught in the blast.

Hyun Ki Ghim suffered catastrophic injuries and died days later.

Hyun Jung survived, but survival brought no peace. Her body was scarred by severe heat and frost trauma. She endured extensive medical treatment, skin grafts, pain, and ongoing complications. Yet the question that haunted everyone was not only whether Hyun Jung would live. It was what the exposure had done to the unborn child inside her.

Some feared the child would not survive to birth. Others feared severe developmental damage, cellular instability, organ failure, or unknown mutation. The thermoplasma exposure had crossed into an area where science had few reliable predictions. Hyun Jung lived with pain, grief, and uncertainty while carrying a child who had already been touched by weapons-grade thermal experimentation before ever taking his first breath.

Kim Ghim was born during Bucheonnim Osinnal, Buddha’s Birthday.

His birth should have been a moment of fragile hope after catastrophe. Instead, the delivery room became an emergency. Within moments of being cleaned and examined, Kim’s body erupted in flame. Medical staff pulled back in panic, but before the fire could consume him, frost spread across his skin. Ice coated his body without killing him. Heat shimmered around the room. Cold vapor rolled across the floor. Flame and frost alternated across the newborn child as if his body contained two opposing worlds and neither could destroy him.

​
Hyun Jung Ghim died during childbirth, leaving Kim orphaned before anyone could understand what he was. His father was already gone. The thermoplasma project was shut down, but the child it had created could not simply be shut away from reality.

So the South Korean government created a new project around him.

Kim was taken into state custody and moved into a secure research facility near the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology. But the longer she worked with him, the harder it became to treat him as a file, subject, or national asset.

His powers protect him, but they do not automatically protect others. In confined spaces, careless use of heat or cold can injure civilians, damage structures, reduce visibility, or worsen oxygen conditions.

Large-area Thermal Equalization is slow, draining, and difficult. The greater the area, the more support and concentration he needs.

Equipment
Equinox’s equipment is designed less as armor and more as stabilization gear. His suit helps him safely transition between powered and non-powered states while reducing accidental harm to people and environments around him.
