Born Into the Aftermath

Chase Chatham entered the world in August 2000, only days after the forces of the Soltan Star Empire had finally been driven from Earth. His birth came at the end of a global catastrophe and at the beginning of an equally difficult period of reconstruction for the Chatham family.

​

His father, Nathan Quincy Chatham, had spent the Soltan occupation fighting alongside the Danbury Militia while repairing and salvaging weapons for resistance forces throughout western Connecticut. Nathan survived the war, but his eyesight had been catastrophically damaged, much of the Chatham family business had been destroyed, and the once-wealthy industrial family emerged from the invasion facing an uncertain future.

​

Nathan refused to accept defeat. With financial support and procurement opportunities from G.U.A.R.D., he rebuilt Chatham Weapons into what eventually became Guardian Weapons Manufacturing, transforming the ruined company into one of America’s leading specialized defense and security manufacturers.

​

While Nathan rebuilt the business, Chase’s mother, Michelle, became the emotional center of the growing Chatham household. Their daughter, Clarise, was born in 2004, and longtime nanny Eleanor “Nora” Walsh became an increasingly important part of the family, ultimately growing far beyond the role of household employee.

​

For the first several years of his life, Chase knew his father as a brilliant but often overworked industrialist. He had no idea Nathan was still carrying the scars of war—or that those scars would eventually lead him toward an entirely different life.

​

Losing Mother...and a Sibling

Everything changed on Christmas Eve 2008.

​

Michelle Chatham, then six months pregnant with the couple’s third child, was violently attacked while completing last-minute Christmas shopping in Danbury. She died from her injuries the following morning. Their unborn child died with her.

​

Chase was eight years old. Clarise was four.

The loss shattered Nathan.

​

For a period, their father withdrew almost completely from family life, isolating himself at Guardian Weapons and descending into alcohol, grief, and obsession. During those months, Nora Walsh became the stabilizing adult in the lives of Chase and Clarise, maintaining their routines and giving the children the security Nathan was temporarily incapable of providing.

​

Eventually Nathan returned to them. He never told his children everything that had happened during his absence. He simply explained that the man responsible for Michelle’s death had been “brought to justice.”

​

Chase would not learn the true meaning of those words for years.

​

A Father Rebuilt

After emerging from his breakdown, Nathan dramatically changed the way he lived. He reduced his daily executive responsibilities at Guardian Weapons and devoted far more time to his children. He attended their activities, traveled with them, created family routines, and deliberately tried to become the father he felt he had failed to be before Michelle’s death.

​

Nathan also recognized that Chase was carrying tremendous anger.

To help his son control it, Nathan introduced him to karate.

​

What began as an emotional outlet became one of the most important stabilizing influences in Chase’s adolescence. Training gave him structure, discipline, confidence, and a healthier understanding of controlled force. By approximately age fifteen, Chase had earned an advanced youth rank equivalent to a first-degree black belt.

​

Nathan took enormous pride in him.

​

Chase never understood why his father occasionally offered surprisingly sophisticated corrections to his fighting technique. He assumed Nathan’s knowledge came from the Soltan war.

​

That explanation seemed reasonable.

​

So did the excuses for Nathan’s increasingly strange nighttime behavior.

​

The Father With Two Lives

As Chase grew older, he began noticing things that did not entirely make sense.

​

Nathan often disappeared late at night and returned before dawn. He sometimes came home exhausted, bruised, cut, or smelling of smoke, rain, chemicals, garbage, and occasionally blood. Medical supplies disappeared from the house. Clothing was inexplicably damaged. Security systems occasionally activated around Nathan’s private study and laboratory areas.

​

Whenever Chase asked questions, Nathan offered explanations involving late-night exercise, engineering accidents, Guardian Weapons emergencies, or unusual business obligations.

​

Some answers were more convincing than others.

But Nathan was his father, and Chase had no reason to imagine the truth.

​

Nathan Chatham was secretly Captain Connecticut.

And Chase would remain completely unaware until it was too late to ask him about it.

​

Christmas Eve 2015

On 24 December 2015, Nathan left home to complete last-minute Christmas shopping in downtown Danbury.

​

He never returned.

​

An ordinary street criminal confronted Nathan during a robbery and shot him six times.

Nathan Chatham died on the sidewalk within moments.

He was forty-five years old.

He was also unarmored.

​

The man who had survived the Soltan occupation, fought terrorists, helped save New England, and served alongside the Yankee Minutemen had not died as Captain Connecticut.

He died simply as Chase and Clarise’s father.

​

Chase was fifteen. Clarise was eleven.

​

Seven years after losing their mother during another Christmas Eve tragedy, the Chatham children were orphans.

​

The Angry Heir

Nathan had taken extraordinary care with his estate planning following Michelle’s death, ensuring that Chase and Clarise remained protected through trusts, guardianship arrangements, and carefully constructed financial safeguards. Nevertheless, Nathan’s death brought extended relatives, lawyers, trustees, and competing financial interests into the children’s lives.

​

Several relatives challenged portions of the estate structure, guardianship arrangements, trustee authority, and corporate voting rights. They could not simply erase Chase and Clarise’s inheritance, but the legal warfare created years of instability, scrutiny, and resentment.

​

Nora again became the adult who held what remained of the Chatham family together.

​

Chase did not cope well.

​

During the following years, grief gradually became anger. He began drinking, partying with people Nora distrusted, skipping obligations, fighting, driving recklessly, and experimenting with marijuana and prescription drugs. His academic performance became inconsistent. Chase had inherited enormous wealth, but much of it remained legally controlled because of his age, creating the strange contradiction of being incredibly privileged while feeling powerless over nearly every important aspect of his life.

​

He knew he was becoming someone neither of his parents would have wanted him to become.

​

He simply did not know how to stop.

​

Then he found Nathan’s secret.

​

Behind the Hidden Door

In 2017, following another bitter family and legal dispute, Chase returned alone to the Chatham residence and entered Nathan’s old study.

He was looking for something connected to his father—documents, photographs, answers, perhaps even alcohol.

​

Instead, Chase accidentally activated a concealed access system.

​

A hidden section of Nathan’s study opened.

Behind it was a sophisticated underground laboratory.

​

Inside, Chase discovered equipment he could barely believe belonged to his father: encrypted computers, surveillance systems, tactical hardware, weapons, armor components, engineering records, mission files, remains of the original Hartford Vigilante equipment, and multiple generations of Captain Connecticut armor.

​

The evidence was overwhelming.

Nathan Chatham had been Captain Connecticut.

​

Every strange absence suddenly made sense.

Every unexplained injury.

Every late-night return.

Every secret Nathan had kept.

​

Chase’s father had lived an entire second life—and Chase had never known.

​

Minuteman

Chase’s entry into the laboratory activated dormant security protocols.

​

Someone else received the alarm.

That person was Minuteman.

​

Minuteman had known Nathan’s identity for years and had quietly maintained protective surveillance around the Chatham family and Nathan’s hidden systems after his death. When the facility activated, he expected an intruder attempting to steal Captain Connecticut technology.

​

Instead, he found Nathan’s teenage son.

​

Chase had been drinking and was emotionally overwhelmed by what he had discovered. When Minuteman attempted to calm and restrain him, Chase’s years of karate training surfaced. Minuteman underestimated him just enough for Chase to land one surprisingly clean strike before the veteran hero immediately recovered and subdued him.

​

Chase demanded an answer to the question that had suddenly consumed him.

Was Nathan really Captain Connecticut?

​

Minuteman answered with a single word.

Yes.

​

Years of grief and confusion erupted.

​

Chase demanded to know why Nathan had lied to him, why the Yankee Minutemen had never saved him, why the world did not know who Captain Connecticut really was, and how a man capable of surviving aliens, terrorists, and superhuman threats could be murdered during a street robbery.

​

Minuteman answered what he could.

For other questions, no answer existed.

Eventually Chase simply broke down.

​

Minuteman returned him safely to Nora’s home and left him with a Yankee Minutemen emergency beacon carrying one instruction:

Contact him when Chase was sober and ready to hear the truth.

​

The Truth at Mystic

Several days later, Chase activated the beacon and traveled to a secluded coastal property near Mystic, Connecticut.

​

Minuteman came to him.

​

For hours, the older hero told Chase about the Nathan Chatham he had never known.

​

He described the United Canadian Empire crisis, the formation of the Yankee Minutemen, Nathan’s courage in battle, his engineering genius, his stubbornness, his mistakes, and his desperate determination to become a better man after Michelle’s death.

​

Minuteman also admitted that he had personally tracked down Nathan’s murderer after the 2015 shooting.

​

He had wanted to kill him.

He did not.

​

Minuteman believed Nathan would never have wanted another man to commit murder simply to avenge him.

That lesson stayed with Chase.

Unfortunately, there was still another truth waiting.

​

The Hartford Vigilante

As Chase continued studying Nathan’s records, he discovered references to a mysterious figure known as the Hartford Vigilante.

Eventually he learned everything.

​

Bruce Nikolaus, the violent criminal believed responsible for Michelle’s murder, had not merely been arrested.

Nathan had hunted him down.

​

Nathan had killed him.

Chase was devastated.

​

For years his father had told him that Michelle’s killer had been brought to justice. Now Chase understood what Nathan had actually done.

Minuteman admitted that he had known the truth and initially withheld it because he believed Chase was not emotionally prepared to hear it.

The revelation nearly destroyed their developing relationship.

​

What ultimately changed Chase’s view was not Minuteman’s explanation, but Nathan’s own private records.

Nathan had never celebrated the killing.

He considered it one of the greatest moral failures of his life.

​

The Hartford Vigilante had not transformed into Captain Connecticut because Nathan believed killing Nikolaus made him heroic. He became Captain Connecticut because he recognized what vengeance had turned him into and spent the rest of his life trying to ensure he never crossed that line again.

​

For the first time, Chase began understanding that heroes could be flawed.

Including his father.

Perhaps especially his father.

​

Becoming the Apprentice

Chase continued meeting with Minuteman.

​

At first, he only wanted to understand Nathan’s world. Then he wanted to understand the armor. Eventually he wanted to learn how to survive inside it.

​

Minuteman resisted.

​

One Chatham had already paid an enormous price for the superhero life.

​

He warned Chase about injury, death, enemies, secrecy, trauma, legal responsibility, and the danger that his actions could eventually place Clarise in harm’s way.

​

Chase refused to abandon the idea.

Eventually Minuteman agreed to train him—but only under strict conditions.

​

Chase would stay in school. He would remain sober during training and operations. He would learn rescue before combat and restraint before weapons. He would understand the law. He would not use Captain Connecticut equipment without authorization. Most importantly, he would never be allowed to believe that inheriting Nathan’s armor automatically made him Nathan’s successor.

​

For approximately two years, Chase trained intensely.

​

Minuteman taught him advanced physical conditioning, combat, first aid, investigation, surveillance, evidence preservation, tactical movement, superhero law, rescue techniques, crisis management, team operations, and use-of-force judgment.

​

Minuteman also regularly disabled Chase’s technological advantages during training.

If the armor failed, Chase still had to function.

If the sensors were wrong, Chase had to recognize it.

If communications disappeared, Chase had to survive.

​

Nathan learned those lessons during an alien occupation.

​

Minuteman intended for Chase to learn them somewhere considerably safer.

​

A Different Kind of Engineer

Continuing his education was non-negotiable.

​

Rather than following Nathan into weapons engineering and corporate defense manufacturing, Chase chose Environmental Engineering, concentrating on resilient energy systems, distributed electrical generation, emergency microgrids, sustainable infrastructure, and disaster-resistant technology.

​

The distinction became important.

​

Nathan had spent much of his professional life developing systems intended to survive conflict.

Chase became interested in systems designed to keep communities functioning when everything else failed.

That philosophy eventually influenced the next generation of Captain Connecticut armor.

​

Building the Mk V

The more Chase studied Nathan’s equipment, the more he realized simply wearing the Mk IV would never make him Captain Connecticut.

Nathan had designed much of the armor around his own cybernetic eyes and particular engineering expertise. Chase possessed neither.

Instead of merely repairing Nathan’s suit, Chase began redesigning it.

​

The resulting Captain Connecticut Body Armor Mk V retained the recognizable navy-and-white legacy of Nathan’s armor while incorporating a younger and substantially different engineering philosophy.

​

Chase emphasized energy efficiency, lighter construction, environmental sensing, emergency power distribution, structural analysis, improved jet-boot endurance, and rescue capability.

​

The Mk V became the first Captain Connecticut armor built primarily by Chase.

One of its most important changes was also one of its least dramatic.

The energy gauntlets defaulted to non-lethal output.

Higher settings required deliberate override.

​

Chase could not guarantee that he would always make the right decision under pressure.

But he could build technology that forced him to think before making the wrong one.

Nathan’s greatest mistake had become one of Chase’s most important engineering principles.

​

Earning Captain Connecticut

Chase eventually asked Minuteman directly to become the next Captain Connecticut.

​

Minuteman did not immediately agree.

Operating the armor was not enough.

Knowing how to fight was not enough.

Being Nathan’s son was certainly not enough.

​

Chase began participating in tightly controlled field operations. He performed rescues, accompanied experienced heroes, made mistakes, suffered injuries, ignored instructions, learned from failures, and gradually accumulated the experience Minuteman believed he needed.

Captain Connecticut became a provisional identity before it became a permanent one.

​

Only after Chase demonstrated sufficient judgment and reliability did he formally register as Captain Connecticut II.

​

Even then, Yankee Minutemen membership was not automatically handed to him.

​

Nathan’s armor could be inherited.

Nathan’s position on the team could not.

Chase eventually earned that as well.

​

Clarise and the Other Half of Nathan’s Legacy

As Chase moved deeper into engineering and superhero operations, Clarise followed a very different path.

She became increasingly interested in the institutional legacy Nathan had left behind.

​

Clarise pursued business education and demonstrated considerable talent in finance, management, corporate governance, and contracts. By 2026, she had entered Guardian Weapons Manufacturing as a junior executive while completing advanced graduate study centered on Corporate Finance, Business Law, and Corporate Governance.

​

The siblings were gradually dividing Nathan’s legacy without ever consciously agreeing to do so.

​

Chase inherited the field.

Clarise inherited the institution.

​

There was only one problem.

Armor was extraordinarily expensive.

​

Chase’s development of the Mk V required advanced composites, specialized ceramics, energy cells, actuator systems, electronics, optical hardware, machine time, and access to certain Guardian Weapons technologies.

​

For a while, Chase concealed the expenses within personal engineering projects, legacy R&D privileges, and investment accounts.

Then Clarise started examining the numbers.

​

Prototype materials disappeared shortly before Captain Connecticut appeared publicly wearing upgraded armor.

Replacement components were ordered after televised damage to the hero’s equipment.

Restricted energy cells moved through unusual internal requisitions.

Machine shops operated at strange hours.

Chase’s engineering expenses were enormous.

​

Clarise began investigating.

Quietly.

Methodically.

​

The day she finally discovers what Chase is doing is becoming increasingly inevitable.

​

And when she does, Chase should not expect immediate approval.

Clarise already lost one member of her family who secretly wore that armor.

She has no intention of casually losing another.

​

The Family That Remains

Eleanor “Nora” Walsh remains a constant presence in both Chatham siblings’ lives.

​

Nora helped raise Chase from infancy, carried both children through Michelle’s death, protected them during Nathan’s breakdown, helped guide them after Nathan’s murder, and endured Chase’s rebellious years with a combination of affection and uncompromising honesty.

Wealth does not impress her.

​

Neither do superheroes.

​

Minuteman may criticize Chase’s tactics.

Clarise may challenge his finances.

Nora is perfectly capable of simply telling him when he is behaving like an idiot.

​

The Chatham siblings also retain one family ritual above nearly everything else.

Every Christmas Day, Chase and Clarise visit Nathan and Michelle’s graves together.

They bring flowers, something warm to drink, often a small ornament, and occasionally exchange one meaningful gift before leaving together to continue Christmas elsewhere.

The ritual is not intended to keep them trapped in grief.

It reminds them where they came from before they return to the lives they are still building.

Captain Connecticut II

By 2026, Chase Chatham is no longer merely an inexperienced teenager trying to imitate his father. He has become an established young superhero with several years of field experience. He remains impulsive at times. He can still be overly confident, emotionally reactive, and too dependent upon technology. He continues to struggle with inherited wealth and with the constant comparisons between himself and Nathan.

But Chase has gradually learned the most important lesson of his life.

​

He does not need to become Nathan Chatham.

Nathan was Captain Connecticut I.

​

Chase must become Captain Connecticut II.

​

He inherited the armor.

He inherited the wealth.

He inherited the technology.

He inherited the secrets.

He inherited the name.

​

But heroism was never included in Nathan’s estate.

​

That part had to be earned.

​

And Chase intends to keep earning it.

​
