History

History

What happens when one of G.U.A.R.D.’s PORTALGUARD engineers decides that teleportation should not remain locked away inside massive fixed-site systems? In Aaron Sanders’ case, it led to one of the most dangerous breakthroughs of his life — and the birth of a new Aeroguardian known as Expeditor.

Aaron Sanders was once considered one of the most promising minds in applied portal sciences. A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, with a doctorate in interdimensional engineering and spatial physics, Sanders helped design several of the large-scale portal systems later adopted by G.U.A.R.D. for controlled teleportation between secured locations around the world. Those systems were monumental achievements, but Aaron wanted more. He wanted mobility. He wanted immediacy. He wanted a portal system that could be carried into disaster zones, battlefield extractions, and impossible rescue operations.

That obsession led him to create a portable portal generator unlike anything G.U.A.R.D. had ever fielded. Mounted within a highly intricate backpack rig, the device can project a circular portal up to twenty feet in diameter, usually opening either five feet in front of him or five feet behind him. In theory, it allows rapid transport of personnel, civilians, or equipment to a designated GPS-derived location anywhere on Earth.

In practice, the system is wildly unstable. Even at its best, the pack is only partially understood by the man who built it.

That is Aaron Sanders’ deepest secret.

Though he presents himself as the device’s master and public face, Sanders understands only a fraction of the pack’s true operating principles. Hidden beneath layers of engineering jargon and experimental hardware is an ugly truth: the device works through a fusion of advanced science and forces bordering on technomagic. Aaron can calibrate it, maintain it, and push it into operation — but he does not truly comprehend why it works as often as it does. He estimates his own understanding at barely twenty percent, and he has no intention of admitting that to G.U.A.R.D., his teammates, or anyone else.

For years, Aaron’s career was marked by failed prototypes, damaged credibility, and poor personal decisions that bled into his private life. His marriage collapsed under the pressure of obsession, professional instability, and emotional distance. His ex-wife, Tina Bowen Sanders, was awarded custody of their son, Jack. Since then, Aaron has been haunted by one driving need: to become the kind of man his son can admire and the kind of father a court might trust again.

That need, more than fame or science, is what pushed him over the line.

Using one of the Aeroguardians’ Search and Rescue suits as a base, Sanders secretly modified the armor, redesigned its power architecture, and integrated his portable portal pack into the frame. The result was a suit built for high-risk insertion, emergency extraction, and impossible saves. It was reckless. It was unauthorized. It was exactly the kind of thing that should have gotten him removed from the program entirely.

Instead, it saved lives.

Aeroguardian initially viewed Sanders as a liability — brilliant, unstable, and far too eager to gamble with forces he clearly did not respect enough. But on three separate missions, Aaron threw himself into lethal danger to save teammates and civilians, nearly dying each time. Those actions changed the conversation. Whatever his flaws, whatever secrets he kept, Aaron Sanders had proven one thing beyond question: when lives are on the line, he runs toward the disaster.

Now operating as Expeditor, Aaron has become one of the Aeroguardians’ most unconventional field assets. He is not their strongest member, nor their most disciplined, nor their most reliable in a technical sense. But when a team needs a path through fire, flood, collapse, or chaos, Expeditor creates one — even if it nearly kills him in the process.

He has already saved more than fifty lives with the portal pack.

He also knows, deep down, that it is only a matter of time before the machine takes him somewhere he cannot come back from.

Powers

Powers

Power Origin: Human (normal)

Expeditor possesses no innate superhuman powers. His abilities are entirely derived from his portal pack and modified rescue suit.

Equipment

Equipment

Portal Pack

Expeditor’s signature device is an advanced backpack generator fitted with four articulated projection arms. These arms emit converging beam arrays that “draw” a stable portal field into existence. The pack is extremely complex, temperamental, and energy-hungry.

Key Functions:

  • Opens portals up to 20 feet wide

  • Can transport groups, debris, rescue gear, or vehicles within field tolerance

  • Uses destination locking based on GPS, internal calibration matrices, and unknown technomagical variables

  • Can be used offensively, defensively, or for rescue extraction

Modified Aeroguardian SAR Suit

Aaron “borrowed” and heavily modified an Aeroguardian Search and Rescue suit to accommodate the portal pack’s extreme demands.

Suit Features:

  • Reinforced frame to handle pack weight and recoil stress

  • Advanced environmental protection for heat, smoke, cold, and airborne contaminants

  • Rescue harness points and drag-assist supports

  • Heads-up display with terrain, biometrics, and emergency route overlays

  • Stabilizer systems to help Aaron remain upright during portal discharge events

  • Expanded energy routing to power pack ignition sequences

Calibration Bracers

Expeditor wears forearm-mounted control systems tied to the pack. These allow him to select target zones, monitor energy output, trigger emergency shutdowns, and attempt mid-operation realignment if a portal starts to destabilize.

Rescue Utility Loadout

Because his role is rescue-first, his suit usually carries:

  • Medical pouches

  • Collapsible stretchers

  • Signal beacons

  • Emergency locator tags

  • Cable line and anchor spikes

  • Compact breaching and cutting tools

  • Waterproof survival pods for maritime rescue

LIMITATIONS

One-Minute Operational Window

The portal pack can only maintain effective full-power field function for about one minute before energy drift, cosmic misalignment, and internal instability force shutdown.

Ten-Minute Cooldown

Once the pack burns through a portal cycle, it generally requires at least ten minutes before Aaron can safely restart it. In a prolonged battle or multi-stage rescue, this is a major vulnerability.

Accuracy Failure Rate

The pack is not dependable enough to be considered truly safe.

  • Roughly 10% chance a jump will not reach its intended destination

  • If the jump fails, there is a 1% chance of displacement into space

  • Otherwise, the misjump will lead somewhere else on Earth

  • Many unintended Earth destinations are remote, hostile, or open ocean

This makes every activation a calculated gamble, especially under stress.

Environmental Dependency

The pack performs better near cosmic nexuses, dimensional thin points, or powerful magical lines. In such places, Aaron can sometimes extend runtime, reduce cooldown, or stabilize the portal field. Away from such locations, the device is significantly less reliable.

Talents

Talents

Genius-Level Theoretical Engineer

Aaron is a highly educated and naturally brilliant scientist in the fields of spatial mechanics, interdimensional theory, advanced systems engineering, and portal architecture. Even though he does not fully understand the deeper principles of his own invention, his intellect is still formidable.

Search and Rescue Adaptation

Expeditor has developed strong instincts in emergency response environments. He is especially effective in:

  • Civilian extraction

  • Hazard-zone ingress and egress

  • Split-second triage support

  • Improvised rescue planning

  • Moving people through collapsing or hostile terrain

Improvisational Problem-Solving

Aaron excels at building solutions under pressure. He is not always elegant, but he is often effective. When the mission begins falling apart, he can rapidly improvise field fixes, reroute systems, and create options others would miss.

Nerve Under Fire

Though anxious and prone to overthinking before action, once people are in danger Aaron tends to commit completely. He repeatedly pushes himself into high-risk situations if it means someone else gets out alive.

Technical Bluffing

One of Aaron’s less admirable but very real talents is his ability to sound absolutely confident while hiding uncertainty. He can buy time, preserve authority, and maintain the appearance of control even when his technology is on the edge of failure.

LIMITATIONS

Partial Ignorance

Aaron’s greatest weakness is the one he hides: he does not actually understand his own invention well enough to guarantee safe use. This means he can neither fully predict nor fully repair the pack if it evolves, mutates, or catastrophically fails.

Psychological Pressure

Aaron’s need for redemption clouds his judgment. He wants to be seen as heroic, competent, and worthy — by his son, by the courts, by his peers, and by himself. That pressure can drive him to take risks he should not take.
