History
Liam McDonald was a native Irishman and a trained geologist employed by Emerald Gas & Oil. During a survey assignment along the Dublin coastline, he was tasked with assessing offshore and coastal geological conditions for possible oil, natural gas, and even tidal-energy potential. During one of these surveys, using echo-sounding sonar equipment, Liam discovered what appeared to be a vast sealed chamber beneath an unowned stretch of shoreline land near Dublin.
After roughly a month of internal debate and planning, company leadership approved a limited expedition to investigate the site and determine whether it might also serve as a viable location for tidal-energy machinery. Accessing the chamber was complicated. A narrow shoreline cave descended toward the identified location, but sonar scans suggested a thick rock barrier separated the explored tunnel from the sealed chamber beyond. Liam’s team concluded that the only practical way in was to use explosives at low tide, since the entry passage would flood when the sea returned. A cofferdam or similar barrier was deemed impractical because of the violent tidal conditions at the cave entrance.
At approximately 2:00 a.m. on a Friday morning, Liam and his team entered the tunnel and prepared the blast charges. Just before the demolition team completed its work, a deep, disembodied voice echoed through the darkness in Gaelic, warning them to leave at once or all who entered “Shavara” would be cursed forever. Two workers fled immediately. Liam and the explosives engineer stayed. Moments later, they blasted open the barrier and crawled into the chamber beyond.
What they found changed Liam’s life forever.
The chamber was illuminated by enormous emerald-colored crystals jutting from the walls, floor, and ceiling in every direction. The crystals were unlike anything Liam had ever seen. They did not simply sparkle or refract light. They seemed alive with motion and stored force. Believing they had found a fortune in precious stones, the engineer rushed forward greedily, scooping up clusters of crystals and stuffing them into his pockets and coat. But the crystals reacted violently to movement. The more kinetic activity they experienced, the more energy they built up, creating an unstable resonance similar to reverse-polarized magnetism combined with gyroscopic force. As the engineer grabbed more and more crystals, he lost control of his footing and body. He stumbled, then careened wildly across the crystal floor, where razor-like formations slashed him repeatedly. Within minutes, he had been thrown over a hundred yards into the center of the chamber, bleeding badly and close to death.
Liam realized the tide would soon return and flood the entire cavern. With only minutes left, he took one of the crystals and began experimenting with it, carefully testing how its energy responded to position, motion, and handling. From this desperate improvisation, he learned how to harness the crystal’s output. Using a single crystal, Liam propelled himself in a controlled kinetic leap across the chamber and reached the injured engineer. Then, using four crystals together, he launched both of them back toward the chamber entrance just as seawater began rushing into the cave.
As Liam carried the engineer through the flooding passage, he looked back and saw the incoming water interacting catastrophically with the crystal field inside the chamber. The entire cavern erupted in a chain reaction of kinetic detonations. The force was described as being near that of a nuclear-scale blast. The explosion hurled Liam and the engineer nearly half a mile out into the sea. The chamber collapsed, causing an estimated two and a half miles of shoreline damage and leaving behind a sinkhole roughly a mile and a half wide. Fortunately, the affected area contained only ruined farm structures and derelict outbuildings, so no one else was killed. Against all odds, both Liam and the engineer survived. Liam also retained four crystals and, in a deliberate act, removed additional crystals from the engineer’s coat, leaving him with more than fifteen specimens.
The aftermath triggered a major investigation. Emerald Gas & Oil fired both Liam and the engineer, Shamus McNeil. Shamus spent most of the investigation in a near-comatose state. Liam concealed the truth about the kinetic crystals, instead claiming the explosion was caused by a methane pocket inside a quartz-lined cavern. Since no surviving crystals were recovered from the site, the company eventually closed the investigation. Shamus, however, ranted about magical green crystals and their extraordinary power. Emerald Gas & Oil responded by having him committed for psychiatric observation. Liam attempted to contact him, but both the company and Shamus blocked any visitation.
Now unemployed, Liam returned home with the crystals and confided in his girlfriend, Sharon Arlington. Sharon was highly educated in physics, and once Liam demonstrated the crystals’ behavior, the two of them recognized that they had stumbled onto something extraordinary. Through experimentation, they learned that the crystalline structures focused and exponentially amplified kinetic energy. Even more astonishing, the crystals could be contained and directed if properly housed in specially designed osmium-alloy frameworks. Under direct sunlight, the crystals also grew at a rate of roughly an inch per week. Before long, Liam and Sharon had cultivated over one hundred cubic feet of crystal growth in their basement laboratory.
Liam later found work with an ore company, which gave him access to scrap osmium alloys useful in developing safer crystal containment systems. Yet the question remained: what should he do with the crystals, and should their existence ever be revealed? The answer came violently.
Shamus McNeil had not emerged from the disaster unchanged. During the original cavern explosion, four crystal fragments had lodged in his skull. Those fragments were removed before his psychiatric confinement, but the knowledge of the crystals’ potential had already reached greedy people inside Emerald Gas & Oil. An unethical executive arranged for Shamus’ release and had him work in a secure company lab to build prototype kinetic generators. Shamus, however, used sonic resonance rather than osmium containment. The result was catastrophic. A high-frequency discharge destroyed half the company headquarters, killed the executive and two engineers, damaged Shamus’ hearing, and shattered what remained of his sanity.
Armed with blackened crystals, crude generators, and his obsessive need for recognition, Shamus decided he would reveal the truth to the world himself. Twisted by trauma and delusion, he convinced himself that all he needed was fame, money, and public attention. While in hiding, he fashioned a costume, forged the corrupted crystals into a pair of gauntlets, and styled himself as a kind of “hero” exposing the truth. Instead, he became a killer. During a bank “withdrawal,” he murdered security personnel, ripped open a vault, stole more than three million euros, and fled while calling himself Emerald Ire.
When Liam saw the news coverage, he immediately recognized both the crystals and the man wearing them. He understood at once that Shamus had to be stopped before more people died. After another robbery, Sharon revealed that she had secretly been designing a suit and combat system for Liam. Most importantly, she had discovered a rare and useful property of the crystals: when magnetically directed through the proper gauntlet alignment, they could fuse into the shape of a large shield rather than erupt or rebound. This shield could absorb and deflect incoming physical or energy assaults. Liam trained quickly with the gauntlets, boots, shield mechanics, and containment systems. None too soon.
Soon afterward, Emerald Ire attacked Dublin’s parliament, screaming that the magical green crystals were his discovery and accusing Liam McDonald and Emerald Gas & Oil of stealing his fame and fortune. Liam contacted parliament security and instructed them to lure Shamus away from the city and toward the coastal blast site by claiming more crystals remained hidden there. The bait worked. In a fit of possessive rage over the idea of “their discovery,” Shamus commandeered a government vehicle and sped to the coast, followed at a distance by police and news crews. There, at the devastated shoreline, Liam stood alone in costume between Emerald Ire and the former cavern site.
Recognizing Liam through the energy signature of the crystals, Shamus asked mockingly whether Liam thought himself some kind of “emerald shield” standing in the way. Liam answered by telling him to stop the violence and surrender.
Shamus attacked immediately.
For the next three minutes, the two men fought with savage intensity. The battle was broadcast live, and the world witnessed violent kinetic blasts, shield blocks, heavy impacts, and brutal close-quarters combat. During the fight, Liam noticed Shamus’ corrupted crystals beginning to pulse in chaotic green-and-purple patterns, growing brighter and more unstable by the second. Realizing an overload was imminent, Liam ordered police to evacuate the area. When it became clear there were only seconds left, Liam made his move. Using the kinetic jump system in his boots, he launched himself straight at Shamus, slammed his gauntlet crystals into the locking latches of Emerald Ire’s gauntlets, knocked both sets loose, and then punched Shamus unconscious. Liam then leapt both of them to safety just before Shamus’ discarded gauntlets exploded, leaving behind a crater fifty feet deep and roughly eighty feet across.
Liam handed the unconscious Shamus over to police, warning them to make sure he carried no crystals and instructing them that any recovered fragments had to be stored in a stable, dark, undisturbed environment. In the confusion afterward, authorities assumed Liam might be linked to the British super-team Commonwealth. Liam gave them a half-answer and took the opportunity to disappear before being dragged into public hearings, legal trouble, or another round of conflict with Emerald Gas & Oil. By the time officials realized Emerald Shield was not part of the Commonwealth, Liam and Sharon were already on their way to the United States.
The pair relocated to Boston. Sharon secured work at Boston College as a faculty member in the energy production department. Liam, still technically wanted for questioning in Dublin, soon received a mysterious letter slipped under the door of their new apartment. The note came from a man calling himself only “The Major.” He congratulated Liam on his heroics, praised his fighting ability, and invited him to meet at a Boston pub to discuss joining a super-team. Liam met him, but explained plainly that battling world-conquering despots was not really his calling.
He saw himself more as someone meant to help police, firefighters, and ordinary people in danger. The Major laughed, said he knew exactly who Liam should meet instead, and wrote down an address. He also assured Liam that the warrant problem would disappear. When Liam asked who was at the address, The Major answered with one name: Irish Fighter. Then he vanished, leaving Liam with the address and the bar tab.
Two days later, Liam arrived in costume at Castle Island in Boston, headquarters of the Emerald Society. After speaking with Irish Fighter and several members of the team, Liam was accepted into the organization as Emerald Shield. The U.S. State Department handled his registration status and work visa, and within two weeks he was publicly introduced as the newest Emerald Society member.
In the present day, Emerald Shield serves as an active member of the Emerald Society. He continues to train, patrol, and develop his equipment alongside Sharon, who remains both his scientific partner and his fiancée. Thanks to a “cleared customs shipment,” Liam recovered his lab equipment, crystal reserves, and even the damaged gauntlet remains from the Dublin battle. The Major, true to his word, arranged for official paperwork clearing Liam of involvement in the Irish incident through a quiet intelligence cover story. Liam also found civilian work with Rocrystals, a small rock-and-crystal supplier that gives him a decent income and access to archaeological and geological sites around the world. But the story is not over. Shamus McNeil has escaped prison, and reports indicate he is hunting for his hidden crystal cache, determined to prove the discovery was always his—and to kill Emerald Shield once and for all.
