Founder, President & Chief Executive Officer
Collin Cooper is the founder, president, chief executive officer, chief engineer—and sole permanent employee—of Works Applied Systems Laboratory. He is also the armored superhero known as Iron Works and a member of the Yankee Minutemen.
A highly accomplished mechanical and systems engineer, Cooper's professional background includes advanced weapons development, powered armor, mechanical systems, metallurgy and composite materials, thermodynamic engineering, communications technology, electronics integration, prototype manufacturing, and related applied sciences.

His experience with powered armor began long before the creation of WASL. Earlier defense-development work exposed Cooper to both the enormous potential and the severe engineering limitations of mechanized combat systems, particularly in the areas of heat management, structural durability, power demands, mobility, operator protection, and systems integration.

Those experiences became the technological foundation from which Iron Works eventually emerged.

Following the establishment of WASL in Kittery, Cooper gained something he had never previously possessed: complete engineering independence. Without corporate management, military procurement requirements, program deadlines, shareholders, or conventional customers, he could develop equipment according to operational need rather than commercial objectives.

Today Cooper personally performs virtually every meaningful function at WASL. He designs components, writes and modifies software, machines replacement parts, conducts materials testing, services electronics, repairs armor damage, evaluates new technologies, manages the facility, and maintains the Iron Works equipment inventory.
His principal operational responsibility is maintaining and continually improving the Iron Works Mk II armor, while his primary development project is the next-generation Mk III system currently under construction and testing.

Publicly, Collin Cooper appears to be the quiet founder of an obscure Maine engineering company.
​
In reality, the company exists because of him, for him, and almost entirely through him.
