Spinel, real name Haitao Smithfield, is a veteran Conglomerate mage and the current bearer of the Cobalt Blue Stone title. Raised in Singapore within a respected Spirit School family, Haitao returned to the Citadel at eighteen to continue his family’s magical legacy. Though never the strongest student, his loyalty, persistence, and spiritual insight earned him a role as a surface-world scout and Stone Leader. Gifted in exorcism, mesmerism, scrying, and spirit communication, he is also haunted by a dark psyche that unlocks his dangerous power of Banishment. Now, influenced by younger mages such as Chay and Carpitma, Spinel is beginning to question old traditions and discover the kind of leader he truly wants to become.

History

Haitao Smithfield was born into a family whose connection to the Spiritual School of Magic stretched back for generations.

His great-grandfather served as a professor within the Spiritual School Academy at the Conglomerate Citadel, helping preserve the rituals, philosophies, and responsibilities associated with communication between the living world and the spirit realm. The Smithfield name carried respect, but it also carried expectations.

Haitao’s grandfather, Baron Cornelius Smithfield, eventually broke with the isolationist traditions of the Conglomerate. He left the hidden Citadel and travelled to Singapore, where he established a scout program intended to observe magical activity in the surface world and identify emerging practitioners beyond the Conglomerate’s direct control.

Cornelius built a new life in Singapore and raised a son there. Haitao’s father later married a Japanese practitioner of Spiritual Magic, bringing together two related but culturally distinct traditions. Haitao was raised in Singapore within a household that respected ancestry, spirit etiquette, magical duty, and the often-unseen consequences of supernatural interference.

Despite his family background, Haitao was never considered an exceptional student.

He was earnest, loyal, and deeply respectful of magical tradition, but he learned slowly and often struggled with theory, formal testing, and academic expectations. His strongest qualities were patience, persistence, and an instinctive understanding that spirits were not simply tools to be commanded.

When Haitao turned eighteen, his parents sent him to the Conglomerate Citadel beneath Greenwich, England, so he could receive the formal Spiritual School education expected of a Smithfield heir.

The transition was difficult.

Haitao had grown up in Singapore and was fascinated by the rapidly changing surface world. Inside the Citadel, he found an ancient society that had modernized only selectively and still viewed much of humanity with caution. While other students focused on rank, examinations, and prestige, Haitao remained distracted by surface technology, changing cultures, and the possibilities beyond the Conglomerate’s wards.

He advanced slowly through the Spiritual School.

Although he never distinguished himself as a brilliant scholar, he proved dependable, discreet, and intensely loyal. Those qualities eventually earned him appointment to the position of Spinel, the Cobalt Blue Stone role within the Conglomerate’s leadership and intelligence structure.

As Spinel, Haitao was assigned to operate as a scout, observer, and occasional spy in the surface world. His task was to monitor magical developments, investigate unusual incidents, maintain contacts, and report threats that might affect the Conglomerate.

The assignment suited his fascination with the outside world, but it also revealed his limitations.

Haitao could be evasive, awkward, and uncertain around ordinary people. He understood spirits more easily than social situations and often doubted his own judgment. Even after receiving a Stone title, he remained convinced that others were more qualified and more capable.

His insecurity eventually drove him to search for artifacts associated with his father and grandfather.

Among the family possessions he recovered was an old crystal ball. When he activated it, Haitao was struck by a sudden flood of prophetic images:

  • An unidentified “Iron” Gem

  • Chay receiving specialized Wild Magic training

  • Tae and Oron Jambiya playing an Arabic children’s game

  • Tae surrounded by a white glowing aura

  • Strange creatures and beings vanishing when Haitao pointed toward them

  • A bright field of flowers turning to dust under the same gesture

At first, the visions seemed disconnected and symbolic. Over time, several began to occur exactly or nearly as he had seen them.

The experience awakened Haitao’s interest in Divination Magic and convinced him that something far larger was unfolding around the younger generation of Conglomerate mages.

During this same period, Haitao became psychically entangled with a dark and invasive presence. The entity did not possess him completely, but it attached itself closely enough to influence his emotions, undermine his confidence, and challenge his control.

The presence was hostile, manipulative, and difficult to detect.

Under its influence, Haitao discovered that he possessed a previously unknown ability: Banishment.

When the dark psyche gained sufficient control, Haitao could force spirits—and in some cases living beings—into the spirit realm. The ability was extraordinarily dangerous and appeared connected to the unsettling visions of creatures vanishing when he pointed at them.

The discovery placed Haitao in a moral and psychological crisis.

As a practitioner of Spiritual Magic, he had been taught to guide, understand, and negotiate with spirits. Banishment represented something harsher: removal, severance, and potentially permanent exile.

He feared the power.

He feared the entity that helped unlock it.

Most of all, he feared that the ability might reflect something within himself.

Haitao’s growing involvement with Chay, Carpitma, Elemental, and other young mages has forced him to reconsider many of the Conglomerate’s assumptions. He has seen courage and insight in students whom senior leaders often dismiss as immature or rebellious.

Through their eyes, he has also begun to recognize that the Stone leadership may be concealing problems, mismanaging threats, or preserving traditions that no longer serve the society they were created to protect.

Today, Spinel remains loyal to the Conglomerate, but his loyalty is no longer unquestioning.

He is working to understand the visions, identify the dark psyche attached to him, and gain control of his Banishment ability without surrendering to it. At the same time, he is trying to become more than the uncertain heir of a respected family.

Haitao Smithfield is beginning to realize that being a Stone Leader does not require him to imitate his ancestors.

It requires him to decide what kind of leader he is willing to become.

Powers

Spiritual Magic

Exorcism

Spinel can remove invasive spirits, possessing entities, psychic intruders, and similar supernatural forces from a living host.

Power Level: Remarkable

His exorcism may be performed through focused commands, ritual gestures, magical staff work, protective circles, or direct spiritual confrontation.

The difficulty depends on:

  • The power of the possessing entity

  • The host’s willingness to resist

  • The length and depth of the possession

  • The presence of magical wards or anchors

  • Spinel’s emotional stability

  • The entity’s knowledge of Spiritual Magic

A successful exorcism separates the entity from its host. It does not automatically destroy or imprison the expelled spirit.

Mesmerism

Spinel can magically influence the thoughts and immediate perceptions of others.

Power Level: Good

He most often uses this ability to prevent surface-world witnesses from remembering magical incidents that could expose the Conglomerate.

Common applications include:

  • Blurring recent memories

  • Encouraging witnesses to leave an area

  • Reducing panic

  • Implanting a harmless explanation for unusual events

  • Preventing someone from focusing on magical details

Mesmerism becomes less reliable against:

  • Strong-willed targets

  • Trained telepaths

  • Magical beings

  • Subjects protected by wards

  • Groups receiving contradictory evidence

Spinel is generally reluctant to use the ability for personal gain.

Spiritual Familiar: Simile

Spinel can manifest a fox-like spiritual familiar called Simile.

Power Level: Excellent

Simile appears as a luminous or semi-transparent fox with an intelligent, alert expression and a strong connection to the spirit realm.

Spinel can perceive through Simile’s eyes and use the familiar for:

  • Scouting

  • Tracking spiritual energy

  • Entering narrow or inaccessible spaces

  • Observing concealed activity

  • Delivering brief warnings

  • Distracting opponents

  • Assisting during rituals

Simile can provide Poor-level attack or distraction support against enemies.

If dispersed or seriously damaged, the familiar returns to the spirit realm and cannot be immediately summoned again.

Divination Magic

Scrying

Spinel can use reflective surfaces, crystal balls, magical orbs, water, smoke, or focused ritual tools to observe events beyond normal perception.

Power Level: Excellent
Vision Duration: Up to approximately 20 seconds

His visions may show:

  • Events from the past

  • Events occurring in the present

  • Possible future events

  • Symbolic warnings

  • Individuals connected to an object or location

  • Magical disturbances

Future visions are not guaranteed outcomes. They represent likely possibilities, branching paths, or events influenced by current choices.

Longer-distance, more distant, or highly protected subjects are increasingly difficult to observe.

Death / Dark Magic

Banishment

Spinel can force a spirit, magical entity, or living being into the spirit realm.

Power Level: Remarkable

This power can only be accessed while the dark possession psyche attached to Haitao is active or exerting influence over him.

Banishment may be used against:

  • Hostile spirits

  • Possessing entities

  • Undead beings

  • Magical constructs with spiritual cores

  • Living beings under exceptional conditions

The target may resist based on its power, spiritual nature, magical defenses, and strength of will.

Because the ability is linked to the dark psyche, every use carries significant risk. Spinel may lose emotional control, experience memory gaps, or allow the entity greater influence over his actions.

He considers Banishment an emergency power rather than a normal combat technique.

WEAKNESSES AND LIMITATIONS

Possession-Linked Instability

Spinel is psychically connected to a dark invasive psyche.

The entity may:

  • Increase his self-doubt

  • Distort his emotions

  • Trigger hostile impulses

  • Interfere with his concentration

  • Manipulate his interpretation of visions

  • Gain influence when Banishment is used

Its true identity, goals, and origin remain unknown.

Chronic Self-Doubt

Haitao frequently questions his own competence and authority.

Under extreme pressure, this may slow his decisions, weaken his confidence, or cause him to defer to less experienced allies.

His uncertainty is not cowardice. Once committed to protecting others, he is capable of considerable courage.

Limited Social Confidence

Spinel is more comfortable with spirits, magical traditions, and formal duties than ordinary social interaction.

He may appear evasive, overly formal, awkward, or suspicious when dealing with unfamiliar surface-world individuals.

Equipment

Magical Staff

A traditional Spiritual School focus carried by Spinel.

Material Strength: Incredible

The staff assists with:

  • Exorcism rituals

  • Spirit communication

  • Defensive casting

  • Divination

  • Magical warding

  • Directing Simile

  • Stabilizing spiritual portals

It may also be used as a durable physical weapon when necessary.

Cobalt Blue Cloak and Cowl

Spinel wears a formal cloak and cowl decorated with gemstone ornaments and traditional Conglomerate symbols.

Linguistic Enchantment

While worn, the cloak allows Spinel to understand and communicate in all known historical and modern Earth languages.

The enchantment does not normally translate:

  • Alien languages

  • Newly invented languages

  • Artificial machine languages

  • Completely unknown magical dialects

  • Non-verbal forms of communication

Magic Detection

The cloak provides Poor-level magical detection within approximately 40 feet.

It can alert Spinel to nearby enchantments, active spells, magical beings, cursed objects, and unstable wards.

Message Orb

A Smithfield family heirloom used for magical communication.

The orb may transmit:

  • Spoken messages

  • Brief visual impressions

  • Symbolic warnings

  • Spirit-sensitive signals

  • Prearranged magical codes

Its maximum range and full capabilities remain dependent on compatible receiving devices and Conglomerate wards.

Family Crystal Ball

An inherited divination artifact linked to Haitao’s father and grandfather.

The crystal ball significantly enhances his ability to receive symbolic or prophetic visions.

It is also the object responsible for the sudden series of future images involving Chay, Tae, Oron Jambiya, the Iron Gem, and the mysterious Banishment events.

Because the artifact may be connected to the dark psyche, Spinel uses it cautiously.

Spinel Stone Regalia

Formal insignia representing Haitao’s position as the Cobalt Blue Stone Leader.

The regalia includes cobalt-blue gemstones, ceremonial clasps, and authority symbols recognized throughout the Conglomerate.

It grants no automatic command over others, but it identifies him as a trusted member of the Stone leadership.

Talents

Spiritual School Knowledge

Spinel possesses professional-level knowledge of Spiritual Magic and the traditions of the Conglomerate’s Spiritual School.

His expertise includes:

  • Spirit etiquette

  • Exorcism rites

  • Possession symptoms

  • Funerary traditions

  • Spirit-realm theory

  • Familiar manifestation

  • Protective circles

  • Ancestral communication

  • Spiritual contracts

  • Containment procedures

Earth Science: Oceanography

Spinel is proficient in the study of oceans, currents, marine environments, seabed formations, and underwater conditions.

This knowledge supports surface-world scouting missions and magical incidents involving oceans, spirits of the sea, or submerged ruins.

Physics: Mathematics

Spinel is proficient in practical mathematics and its application to magical geometry, distance, probability, and ritual design.

His training is particularly useful when calculating:

  • Ward patterns

  • Divination coordinates

  • Ritual timing

  • Magical circles

  • Portal geometry

  • Probability-based visions

Prestidigitation

Spinel is proficient in minor magical effects and utility spells.

He can perform simple tasks involving:

  • Light

  • Sound

  • Object movement

  • Minor illusions

  • Cleaning

  • Symbol creation

  • Ritual preparation

  • Small magical conveniences

Hot Dog Business Operations

Spinel has become proficient in the basic operation of the hot dog business established by Chay, Carpitma, and Elemental.

His involvement may include:

  • Supervising supplies

  • Handling transactions

  • Assisting with scheduling

  • Managing difficult customers

  • Monitoring magical food safety

  • Providing reluctant adult oversight

Although he rarely admits it, Spinel appears to enjoy the business and the informal social contact it provides.
