MAJOR DEEJ UNIVERSE

Once the leader of the Manhattan 'protection racquet' street gang, the 'SoHo (South of Houston Street) Sandmen', Scott Sands, asked for a low level amount of money from SoHo businesses to  'protect' them from rival gangs. As such, the SoHo Sandmen actually DID their job and if anyone messed with the businesses, not only did the SoHo Sandmen rapidly respond, they'd help any of the victims of the crime or malfeasance that occurred. In the community, they were considered a 'just' service expense. Sadly, one such gang, the Uberknights, decimated the SoHo Sandmen in a massive gang war.

 

After defeating Scott and his gang, the Uberknights went around attacking the SoHo businesses and people, killing anyone who dared cross them. Scott, after a month in the hospital recovering swore he'd never allow this to happen again. With only 5 other (barely in fighting trim) gang members, Scott devised a detailed plan to not only defeat the Uberknights, but get them to decimate their own ranks.

 

Scott agitated one Uberknight gang member against another with true and false information, causing a civil war in the gang. When the Uberknights set a 'fight for leadership' challenged down, Scott and his few SoHo Sandmen called in the business leaders, other gangs and even some 'dirty' cops and basically surrounded the Uberknights and defeated them...after they'd already beaten themselves up in their own civl war fight for leadership. In the end, the SoHo Sandmen gang grew back to its former status, but THIS TIME, they didn't charge for services...instead, the businesses 'offered up' what they could, when they could; free internet, home services, home cooked dinners, pies, and sometimes cash and merchandise, but never as a 'protection racquet', just a perpetual 'thank you' for keeping SoHo clear of other rival gangs...and helping out the people of the community. The SoHo Sandmen are respected in the community, but not by everyone. Scott, called simply the 'SoHo Sandman', was respected by EVERYONE.

 

Scott, realizing his name was synonymous with the old ways, relinquished leadership to the gang to another and instead joined forces with NYC's vigilante team, the Knightshift, in patrolling and dispensing vigilante justice where needed. Scott, as the SoHo Sandman (they never let him lose his title), still patrols SoHo, but only independently and with the SoHo Sandmen's gang's permission.

 

Today, the SoHo Sandman continues to be a street justice vigilante with the Knightshift team.  He has a heart of gold and nothing but disgust for hurtful and uncaring criminals.  Those caught involved in human trafficking and/or child slavery earn extra beatings from this guy.

He's level headed but can be a bit myopic when it comes to his idea of dispensing justice. It seems he likes to inflict pain as a 'motivational tool' to those criminals causing 'a disservice' to the people.
