CHARACTER SUMMARY
Darian Baptiste, known as Scorpio, is the Order of the Zodiac’s psychic investigator and counterintelligence specialist, operating from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. His mutant resonance abilities reveal emotional impressions, establish limited psychic connections, and deliver a debilitating Psychic Sting. Patient, perceptive, and fiercely loyal, he combines conventional investigation with unsettling access to emotionally charged experiences. His greatest danger lies in mistaking protection for possession—and treating confidences as leverage when he feels betrayed.

HISTORY
Darian Baptiste built his professional life around discovering relationships other people wanted hidden.
Raised in Trinidad and Tobago, he developed an interest in how influence moved through communities, businesses, and institutions. A payment could appear legitimate while concealing an obligation. A familiar intermediary could connect people who publicly claimed never to have met. Darian learned to follow those connections patiently. His mutant abilities complicated that work before they improved it.
Touching an object could expose him to a sudden impression of fear or attachment. Direct contact with a place sometimes revealed an emotional weight that its present occupants did not explain. Contact with another person could bring fragments of emotionally significant experiences. These impressions were powerful, but they were not reliable accounts of events. Darian learned that a frightened person could be innocent, a confident person could be lying, and a vivid memory could reflect a mistaken belief.
He developed investigative discipline partly to keep his own perceptions honest. Working on concealed financial relationships and criminal influence, Darian used conventional research, interviews, and cultivated sources to establish evidence. His abilities helped identify what deserved closer examination. They did not replace the examination itself.
His greatest professional strength became his treatment of people.
Darian could listen to difficult disclosures without making someone feel diminished. He remembered concerns, recognized distress, and understood that supplying information could endanger far more than a person’s employment. He helped sources find protection, preserved confidences, and remained available after an investigation ended.
Many trusted him for good reason. Over time, however, he became increasingly unwilling to accept that someone he protected could make a decision he considered unsafe. A source withdrawing cooperation became a person who needed further supervision. A colleague questioning his methods became someone whose motives required examination.
Darian continued investigating people after his legitimate reason to do so had ended. Each intervention could be explained as protection. Together, they became a private system of surveillance, psychic intrusion, and leverage. Information gathered in confidence gave him the means to influence people who no longer wanted his involvement. He still believed his concern for them entitled him to remain.
As his methods crossed professional and personal boundaries, Darian became more selective about whom he trusted with the truth of his work. He cultivated contacts who valued results and discretion more than accountability. His association with the Order of the Zodiac offered a wider purpose for those methods. Its members faced enemies capable of exploiting a careless disclosure, compromised intermediary, or concealed personal attachment. Darian could identify such vulnerabilities—and help prevent them from becoming disasters.
Taking the identity of Scorpio, he became an investigator and counterintelligence specialist for the Order.
By 2026, Scorpio operates from Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, his assigned city within the Order’s Twelve-City framework. His private investigative workspace supports confidential interviews, evidence analysis, and the examination of emotionally significant objects. He traces hostile influence, evaluates sensitive contacts, investigates suspected compromises, and assists recruitment involving people whose cooperation requires considerable trust. He can sincerely regard the Zodiac as his chosen people while believing that loyalty gives him the right to investigate them. His work protects the organization, but his tendency to treat privacy as a potential security problem threatens its internal trust.
Scorpio keeps confidences carefully until he decides that someone has betrayed the relationship under which those confidences were given. At that point, information once protected can become the foundation of a patient campaign against its owner.
PERSONALITY
Scorpio is attentive, quietly warm, patient, and emotionally intense. He has a dry sense of humor and can be relaxed company among people he trusts. He prefers meaningful conversation to social performance and rarely pressures someone to fill a silence.
His loyalty can involve real sacrifice. He remembers who stood beside him, protects vulnerable associates, and takes personal responsibility for people he has promised to help.
His central flaw is possessiveness disguised as continued concern. He struggles to accept that another person can value him while refusing his involvement.
When he feels betrayed, emotional certainty can overtake investigative discipline. Ambiguous evidence begins to resemble confirmation. His patience, usually an asset, allows him to sustain a grievance long after others believe it settled.

POWERS
PSYCHIC RESONANCE
-
Scorpio possesses mutant sensitivity to emotionally significant psychic impressions. Through touch, familiarity, and concentrated engagement, he can perceive traces of experience and establish limited connections with other minds.
-
Operating Rank: Incredible (40).
-
His perceptions reflect emotional experience rather than objective truth. They do not automatically establish guilt, identify deception, or reveal an accurate sequence of events.
-
Active resonance can manifest as restrained dark-crimson concentric ripples near a contact point, his hand, or his temple. These effects represent psychic activity rather than physical projectiles or Arcane spellwork.
EMOTIONAL IMPRESSIONS
Through deliberate touch, Scorpio can examine strong emotional traces associated with a person, object, or place.
He may perceive fear, grief, affection, anger, anticipation, or other intense responses, accompanied by fragmentary sensations or associations.
-
Direct contact is required.
-
Recent or repeatedly reinforced impressions are generally clearer.
-
Several people’s impressions may overlap.
-
Emotionally insignificant details are usually unavailable.
-
He cannot automatically identify an unfamiliar person from an impression.
This ability guides investigation; interpretation and corroboration remain necessary.
RESONANT CONNECTION
Following meaningful direct contact and a successful psychic FEAT, Scorpio can establish a temporary connection with one person. While the connection remains active and within range, he can recognize that person’s emotional presence nearby and notice abrupt distress.
-
Range: 40 feet.
-
Duration: Up to 1 hour, ending sooner if deliberately dismissed or disrupted.
-
Capacity: One connected person at a time.
-
Resistance: An unwilling subject may resist.
The connection provides a broad sense of emotional presence and direction, not precise coordinates or continuous access to thoughts. It does not transmit sight, sound, or ordinary conversation. Leaving range suspends perception; it does not extend the connection’s duration.
DEEP CONTACT
Through sustained physical contact and concentration, Scorpio can explore emotionally charged memories and associations.
A willing subject can help direct the examination. An unwilling subject may resist through an opposed Psyche FEAT.
-
One subject at a time.
-
The process requires sustained attention.
-
Strong impressions may emerge quickly; useful interpretation generally takes longer.
-
Memories arrive as subjective fragments rather than a complete searchable record.
-
He cannot freely browse unrelated memories or guarantee recovery of forgotten information.
His body remains vulnerable while deeply engaged. Breaking physical contact ends the examination.
PSYCHIC STING
Through an active resonant connection, Scorpio can deliver a concentrated psychic shock.
-
Damage: Excellent (20) psychic damage.
-
Range: Within the connection’s 40 foot limit.
-
Rate: One attack per round.
-
Target: Only the person to whom he is currently connected.
The attack can cause pain and disrupt attention. Additional disorientation or interruption requires an appropriate resisted result; it is not automatic. Psychic Sting does not compel obedience, implant beliefs, or inherently cause permanent mental injury. It does not require physical contact at the moment of attack, but the resonant connection must already have been established.
INNER REFUGE
Scorpio can withdraw his attention into a disciplined internal state, helping him resist psychic intrusion and regain emotional composure.
Modifier: +1 CS Psyche against psychic intrusion while maintaining this focused state.
While withdrawn, his awareness of the physical environment is reduced, and he cannot conduct another active resonance working. His body remains vulnerable. Inner Refuge does not heal physical injuries or make him immune to psychic attacks.
LIMITATIONS
-
He can maintain only one resonant connection or deep-contact examination at a time.
-
His abilities do not provide unrestricted telepathy, mind control, automatic truth detection, or worldwide tracking.
-
Powerful impressions can affect his own emotions and judgment.
-
Crowds, shared objects, and emotionally turbulent locations can produce confusing overlap.
-
Distance, broken concentration, psychic defenses, and applicable protective abilities can interrupt his work.
-
His interpretations can be incomplete or wrong.
-
He cannot assume that a person’s emotional response explains its cause.

EQUIPMENT
ZODIAC FIELD ATTIRE
-
Scorpio wears a purpose-built midnight-blue, mid-calf trenchcoat with a raised collar, oxblood lining, restrained dark-copper edging, and a split construction that accommodates movement.
-
Beneath the open coat, a fitted midnight-blue combat suit incorporates broad oxblood chest and abdominal panels. A copper Scorpio glyph marks the upper chest. Selectively reinforced shoulders, forearm bracers, knee and shin protection, integrated field boots, and a compact utility belt complete the outfit.
-
The costume supports investigation and close combat while maintaining a distinctive Zodiac identity. No quantified armor rank is assigned.
CONTACT-ACCESS GLOVES
-
His protective field gloves incorporate fold-back access for deliberate bare-skin contact. He can expose a hand when examining emotional impressions or establishing direct psychic contact.
-
The gloves help him manage contact during investigations. They provide ordinary physical coverage rather than supernatural protection and do not function as a complete psychic shutoff.
INVESTIGATIVE EQUIPMENT
-
Scorpio carries a secure phone, compact recording equipment, a small camera, and ordinary tools appropriate to interviews and field investigation.
-
His equipment supports conventional evidence gathering; it does not validate a psychic impression by itself.
SECURE COMMUNICATOR
Standard Zodiac communications equipment allows coordination during investigations and operations. A discreet earpiece supports communication without occupying his hands.
PERSONAL RECORDS
Scorpio maintains carefully organized investigative notes that distinguish documented evidence, source statements, psychic impressions, and his own interpretations.
Access is restricted because those records can expose both operational vulnerabilities and sensitive personal information.

TALENTS
INVESTIGATION
-
Scorpio develops and tests explanations through interviews, records, physical observations, and corroborating sources.
-
Modifier: +1 CS Reason for applicable investigative analysis.
FINANCIAL RELATIONSHIP ANALYSIS
-
He traces concealed payments, obligations, intermediaries, and conflicts of interest.
-
Modifier: +1 CS Reason when examining relevant financial relationships.
INTERVIEWING AND SOURCE DEVELOPMENT
-
Scorpio encourages disclosure through patience, careful questions, and sustained personal attention. His effectiveness depends on the individual and circumstances.
-
Modifier: +1 CS to appropriate social FEATs during a substantive interview. It does not compel cooperation.
COUNTERINTELLIGENCE
-
He recognizes indicators of compromised communications, manipulated sources, hostile recruitment, and concealed influence.
-
Modifier: +1 CS Reason or Intuition, as appropriate, when assessing evidence of an operational compromise.
DISCREET OBSERVATION
-
Scorpio is practiced at following activity, maintaining an unobtrusive presence, and recording useful details.
-
This training does not grant invisibility or immunity to detection.
PSYCHIC INTERPRETATION
-
Experience helps him distinguish an emotional impression from the explanation he is tempted to assign to it.
-
Modifier: +1 CS Reason when analyzing information already obtained through resonance. This does not increase the power’s range, damage, or ability to penetrate resistance.
DEFENSIVE COMBAT
Practical close-combat training supports escape, restraint, and creating distance when an investigation becomes dangerous.
He remains capable when psychic contact is unavailable.
