Robert Conway (Father, Deceased)(Former Conglomerate Sediment Initiate and trained Arcane practitioner)

Catherine Conway (Mother, Deceased)(Singapore shop owner and former Conjuration initiate)

Chay, real name Charles Conway, is a 19-year-old Singapore-raised mage and one of the Conglomerate’s most unpredictable young talents. The son of two former Conglomerate practitioners, Chay was drawn into the hidden Citadel after his parents disappeared, only to find himself trapped inside a rigid magical society he openly distrusts. Trained in Arcane and Alteration magic, and gifted with unstable Wild Magic, he has become a clever, rebellious, and highly unconventional hero. Alongside friends such as Carpitma, Elemental, and Strider, Chay regularly defies authority, survives magical disasters, and proves that beneath his sarcasm and roguish attitude is a fiercely loyal young man determined to protect others—and force the Conglomerate to change.

HISTORY

Charles Conway was born and raised in Singapore, the son of two former residents of the hidden Conglomerate Citadel beneath Greenwich, England.

His father, Robert Conway, had once trained as a Sediment Initiate before pursuing Arcane practices. His mother, Catherine, had studied Conjuration before leaving the Conglomerate and establishing a shop in Singapore. Like many others during the mass departures of the 1990s, Robert and Catherine had grown tired of life inside the secretive magical enclave and its rigid control over its people.

After leaving the Citadel, the couple travelled widely, visiting surface-based schools of magic and studying how other traditions interacted with ordinary humanity. Their travels eventually brought them to Southeast Asia and the Pacific, where they became deeply interested in Polynesian magical practices, runes, spiritual histories, and ceremonial systems.

They settled in Singapore and devoted much of their lives to documenting what they had learned. Together, they created private tomes filled with Polynesian magical research, translated rites, runic systems, and personal theories.

Chay grew up surrounded by magical knowledge, but not always by parental attention.

As a child and teenager, he often felt that his parents were more invested in their books, research, and expeditions than in him. His resentment grew as their work became increasingly secretive. When Robert and Catherine disappeared during what had been described only as another magical journey, Chay was left alone with their apartment, their belongings, and a lifetime of unanswered questions.

Unknown to him, the Conway family had been observed for years by Conglomerate scouts. Once his abandonment became clear, representatives of the hidden society approached Chay and offered him training, protection, and a place within the Citadel.

Before he could make a clear decision, Chay was confronted by a dangerous dark magical being. The encounter made his return to the Conglomerate far more complicated and forced several senior figures to reconsider how he should be introduced into their society.

Rather than entering through a normal admissions process, Chay became involved in a magical tournament. He formed a team called ESC — Escape alongside Strider and Elemental.

The team finished third overall and won first place in a teleportation competition. For reasons tied to the secrecy of the event, the participants’ memories were later erased. Even so, Chay’s performance was recorded by the Conglomerate and earned him exclusive entry into an accelerated Arcane School program.

What seemed like an opportunity quickly felt like confinement.

Once inside the Citadel, Chay realized that he was not free to leave whenever he wished. He became openly hostile toward Conglomerate authority, challenging its restrictions, leadership, and treatment of young magic users. He understood the dangers the institution was trying to contain, but he despised the methods it used and frequently described the Conglomerate as a cult.

During this period, Chay befriended another young student, Carpitma. Though their personalities differed sharply, they became close friends and frequent adventuring partners. Together with Elemental, they also created a hot dog business inside the Citadel.

What began as a joke became a minor cultural phenomenon. Hot dogs were largely unknown within the isolated magical community, and the business quickly became popular with students, residents, and even several senior figures.

Chay’s early magical career was far less successful.

His power frequently misfired, surged unpredictably, or caused effects he had not intended. His difficulties made him a source of frustration for instructors and a danger to himself and others. He also resisted the Conglomerate’s preference for strict specialization, instead learning from multiple magical schools whenever possible.

Several Stone Leaders eventually recognized that Chay’s problem was not a lack of power, but a fundamental difference in how his magic functioned. With their guidance, and with help from his new roommate Nathan, Chay learned that he possessed a rare form of Wild Magic.

Nathan’s own abilities allowed him to stabilize Chay’s unpredictable magical surges, giving Chay greater control than he could achieve alone.

Since then, Chay has become one of the most unconventional young magic users in the Conglomerate. He combines formal Arcane training, Alteration enchantments, inherited Polynesian magical knowledge, and dangerous Wild Magic.

He remains difficult, rebellious, and openly critical of the Conglomerate’s traditions. Yet despite his anger, he repeatedly fights to protect its people.

Chay will defend the Citadel.

He will learn from its teachers.

He may even help save its leaders.

But he refuses to pretend that the system is fair, healthy, or beyond reform.

That contradiction has made him one of the most influential young voices in a growing movement questioning the old order of the Conglomerate.

Powers

Arcane Magic

Arcane Shields

Chay can generate magical shields that provide Good-level protection against physical, energy, magical, and environmental damage.

The shield normally protects his immediate body and can extend approximately six feet beyond his personal space.

The barrier may be shaped into a partial wall, frontal defense, or short-range protective field.

Its effectiveness may be reduced by sustained attacks, powerful magical forces, or Chay’s loss of concentration.

Arcane Bolt / Missile

Chay can project concentrated Arcane energy as a directed magical missile.

Power Level: Good
Maximum Range: Approximately 40 feet

The projectile may be used against a single target and can strike with blunt magical force or raw Arcane energy.

Arcane Blast

Chay can release a broader magical attack across an approximately 45-degree arc.

Power Level: Poor
Maximum Range: Approximately 40 feet
Targeting: Automatically homes toward valid targets with extremely high accuracy

Although less powerful than his direct Arcane missile, the blast is difficult to avoid because it adjusts its path after being released.

Arcane Explosion

Chay can release a burst of Arcane energy affecting his immediate surroundings.

Power Level: Poor
Area of Effect: Immediate area around Chay

The explosion is useful when surrounded, restrained, or threatened by multiple nearby targets.

Because it affects a broad area, it must be used carefully around allies, civilians, and fragile objects.

Counterspell

Chay can use Arcane energy to disrupt, deflect, or neutralize incoming attacks.

Power Level: Good

Counterspell may be used instead of a conventional dodge or evasion maneuver, particularly against magical attacks.

The ability may also interfere with activated spells, summoned effects, or magically enhanced weapons.

Detect Magic

Chay can sense magical energy, active enchantments, magical beings, and nearby artifacts.

Base Power Level: Typical
Standard Range: Approximately 60 feet

Detection becomes less reliable at greater distances. Each significant range increase reduces his effective level of perception.

The ability does not always identify the exact source or school of magic without further study.

Prestidigitation

Chay can perform a wide variety of minor Arcane effects.

Power Level: Typical
Range: Approximately 60 feet

Common uses include:

  • Moving or retrieving small objects

  • Producing lights, sparks, smoke, or sound

  • Cleaning or altering minor visual details

  • Opening simple locks or latches

  • Creating brief illusions

  • Marking surfaces with temporary magical symbols

  • Performing small utility spells

Prestidigitation cannot normally duplicate the full effects of a major spell or cause significant direct damage.

WILD MAGIC

Chay possesses an unpredictable magical force that can produce a wide range of effects.

When Wild Magic is activated, its outcome is determined through a tarot-inspired random draw or equivalent chance-based method.

Possible results may include energy projection, teleportation, transformation, environmental changes, summoned effects, defensive magic, or completely unexpected magical events.

Control Levels

  • No Control — Blue Result

    • A random Wild Magic effect occurs automatically.

  • Limited Control — White Result

    • No magical effect occurs.

  • Partial Control — Green Result

    • Approximately a 50 percent chance of producing the desired effect. Otherwise, a random Wild Magic result occurs.

  • Strong Control — Yellow Result

    • Approximately a 75 percent chance of producing the intended magical effect.

  • Perfect Control — Red Result

    • Chay may select the magical effect he intends to create.

Nathan’s Stabilization

Chay’s roommate, Nathan, can use his own magical abilities to stabilize and augment Chay’s Wild Magic.

When Nathan is actively assisting, Chay gains a Remarkable-level chance of controlling the resulting effect.

The exact outcome may still be influenced by stress, magical interference, hostile wards, or Chay’s emotional state.

ALTERATION MAGIC

Evocation Enchantments

Chay can temporarily enchant non-living objects, weapons, armor, tools, or equipment.

Power Level: Good
Success Rate: Approximately 75 percent

A successful enchantment enhances the object’s existing purpose or grants it a temporary magical property.

Possible uses include:

  • Increasing a weapon’s damage

  • Reinforcing armor

  • Improving an object’s durability

  • Adding magical light or heat

  • Improving a tool’s effectiveness

  • Temporarily granting an object limited magical resistance

An unsuccessful attempt produces no effect.

This ability does not require mana expenditure in the same way as many of Chay’s other spells.

It cannot normally be used directly on living beings.
